Daihatsu Boon - car review

The Daihatsu Boon front-wheel compact hatchback, which entered the market in June 2004 and replaced the Daihatsu Storia model (similar to Toyota Duet), is the result of a joint design development of two Japanese manufacturers: Toyota and Daihatsu. In this case, we are talking about equal cooperation of companies, one of which, Daihatsu, has a wealth of experience in the production of small cars. In fact, Daihatsu Boon is no different from the Toyota Passo car, with the exception of some decorative elements. Technical development of the model and its design was done mainly by Toyota specialists, and the production itself was deployed in the Daihatsu workshops.

The chassis of the car is a completely new development, just like the base engine - a 1-liter engine with three cylinders and two camshafts. Daihatsu Boon is available in 7 trim levels, with three body styles (M300S, M310S, M301S), two engines and a front or four-wheel drive. The dimensions of the 5-seater 5-door body are 3595/1665/1535 mm with the wheelbase 2440 mm and the track 1465/1475 mm. The curb weight is 930 kg (for the 1.3 CX F package) and 940 kg for the 1.0 CX F package 4x4. The height of the ground clearance is 160 mm. The car is designed as simple as possible for daily use.

The spacious, wind-shaped cabin with a large glass area provides good visibility for the driver and an acceptable level of comfort. The enlarged instrument panel is functional, the gear lever is moved to the console, the steering column is adjustable in height. There is no tunnel on the floor, and the design of the seats is designed in such a way as to maximally simplify the procedure for their possible transformation (folding in parts and moving back and forth on a sled) or removal. The interior dimensions of the interior are solid for a car of this class of 1830/1400/1275 mm and are a record for such cars.

The model features a high degree of noise and vibration protection, in large part due to the special technology of valve processing used by Toyota. The list of basic equipment includes electric windows and mirrors, factory tinted, rear wiper, electric power steering, power supply system, remote key, air conditioning, radio, CD player. Additionally, you can order xenon, rear fog lights, tachometer, navigation system with LCD monitor, reversing camera and alloy wheels.

Petrol engines are installed on the vehicle: 3-cylinder 12-valve 1KR-FE DOHC of 0.996 liters (71 hp / 6000, 94 Nm / 3600), as well as 4-cylinder 16-valve K3-VE DOHC of 1.297 liters, developing power 90 hp (at 6000 rpm) and torque of 124 Nm (3200 rpm). Both engines run on high-octane gasoline, but they also “digest” the domestic AI-92 and, not least, comply with the 2005 standard for a 75% reduction in exhaust gases (SU-LEV). The average fuel consumption of 5.6 liters per 100 km for the engine of 1.3 liters and 5.4 liters - in 1-liter. The only possible type of proposed transmission is a 4-speed automatic. All-wheel drive equipped with a version with a 0.996-liter engine.

Independent front suspension with MacPherson strut struts, coil springs and anti-roll bar, rear - torsion bar three-screw with coil springs. The minimum turning radius is only 4.3 m, which contributes to the excellent maneuverability of the car and assumes no parking problems in urban areas. Front ventilated disc brakes, rear drum. The standard tire size is 155 / 80R13 79S. The list of passive safety features includes 2PB, door stiffness boosters, central power window lock, extra brake light, tensioners and retainers for 3-point seat belts and a child seat attachment mechanism. Up to 4 additional PBs are charged for surcharge.

Active safety system includes ABS, EBD and auxiliary braking system Brake Assist. The car is stable when driving along the path, the steering is quite clear, and the brakes are tenacious.
