The FIAT Palio family of front-wheel-drive mini-cars was developed in 1996 as part of the “world-wide” car project for the markets of developing countries in Asia and Latin America. It includes the Palio hatchback, the Palio Weekend wagon, the Siena sedan and the Strada pickup. Palio's predecessor was Fiat Uno. Originally, hatchback and sedan cars were produced in Brazil, since 1997 - in Argentina and Poland. In the same year began the release of a model with a station wagon. Fiat Palio is also going to India, Venezuela, Turkey, China, South Africa, North Korea, Egypt and Morocco. In 2008, the fourth generation of this model was presented on the market.
The car also bears the name of Nanjing Fiat Palio (China) and Pyonghwa Hwiparam (North Korea). By body type Palio can be a 3-and 5-door hatchbacks and wagon. At the core of all modifications is the W178 platform. The design of the car is simple and harmonious, which is typical of Italian models.
At the same time, the drag coefficient of the hatchback body is only 0.33. At first, the compact 5-door station wagon Palio Weekend was not offered for European sales, but in 1998 it began to be supplied to the European market: a similar car turned out to be in demand in Europe, where there are very few cheap and quite roomy passenger wagons of size class B. Appearance and equipment the cabin of this car was developed by the design firm IDEA in Turin. In addition, the wagon is available in the Adventure package with high ground clearance and reinforced suspension. The dimensions of the hatchback are 3827/1634/1446 mm with a base of 2373 mm and a track 1418/1378 mm.
At the station wagon base is longer by 64 mm, dimensions 4215/1634/1515 mm, and the track 1418/1385 mm. The curb weight is 945/1080 kg, respectively, the total 1310/1580 kg. Palio, sold in Russia, adapted for our conditions and equipped with a more powerful starter, high-capacity battery (60 a / h), wiring of increased cross-section, frost-resistant rubber and plastic parts, reinforced silent-suspension blocks, additional windshield heating in the wiper blades area , powerful heater, metal protection of the crankcase of the engine. Also, the ground clearance is increased to 165 mm, the bottom is double galvanized, and the engine “digests” the 92nd gasoline.
As an additional equipment, a central locking system, a radio tape recorder, driver’s seat heating, air conditioning, etc. are offered. Interior Palio simple and rational, fabric upholstery. The seat fit the driver of average height. Comfortable steering wheel height adjustable, power included in the basic package. The dashboard is concise and easy to read, the gear lever "in place". The interior is well sealed, and a well-thought-out ventilation system virtually eliminates the fogging of glasses.
The rear seat in the hatchback is designed more for miniature passengers, others will be cramped here. In the wagon, the roof is higher than the hatchback; as a result, its cabin is much more spacious, and not only in height, but also, thanks to a larger wheelbase, in length. The luggage compartment is quite roomy for a hatchback (0.28 m3) and large for a station wagon (0.46 m3). It can be further increased by folding the entire rear seat backrest (0.65 m3), in this case, the trunk volume in this case reaches 1.54 cubic meters. Both models are equipped with full-size "spare wheel".
The range of engines installed on the Palio, is very extensive: in numerous modifications for different markets use at least 10 petrol and 4 diesel engines. So, the 4-cylinder 8-valve petrol 1.2 l (60 hp, 102 Nm) and the 4-cylinder 16-valve turbo diesel Multijet 1.3 l (70 hp, 115 Nm ). Brazilian versions are equipped with gasoline / alcohol 4-cylinder 8-valve Flex engines of 1.0 l (66 hp, 92 Nm), 1.4 l (81 hp, 122 Nm) and 1.8 l (115 hp, 178 Nm). In India and China, the Palio is assembled with 4-valve 8-cylinder petrol engines Fire 1.2 liters and 1.5 liters (85 hp, 123 Nm).
For some markets, diesel is offered for 1.7 L R4 8V (62 hp, 118 Nm) and 2 turbo diesel: 1.7 L R4 8V (72 hp, 140 Nm) and 1.9 L R4 8V (63 hp, 120 Nm). Acceleration to a hundred in a 1-liter hatchback is 16 s, the 1.2-liter is 13.2 s, the maximum speed is 154-157 km / h, the average gas mileage is 5.5-6 l. Russia sells gasoline versions with 1.2-liter and 1.6-liter R4 16V (100 hp, 137 Nm) engines. The dynamics of the last 10.3 s to 100 km / h and a maximum speed of 175 km / h. Fiat Palio is completed with a clearly working 5MKPP.
The front independent suspension of both the hatchback and the station wagon is mounted on a subframe, consists of MacPherson strut, coil springs and anti-roll bar; rear independent with coil springs, double-acting shock absorbers and torsion bars; at Fiat Weekend, it is on an N-shaped subframe consisting of a tubular crossbeam and two longitudinal elements, while the entire structure is attached to the body through damping cushions. This scheme allows you to increase the depreciation properties of the suspension, as well as improve handling and comfort. Front disc brakes, rear drum. The standard tire size is 175 / 65R14 for the hatchback and 175 / 70R14 for the station wagon.
Safety is provided by the standard equipment ABS and 4 airbags. In motion, the car is easily controlled and quite dynamic. The gear shift is clear, the steering is sensitive and moderately sharp (2.5 turns between the extreme positions), and the brakes are informative. Engines are characterized by acceptable dynamics at medium speeds and good temperament at high. Energy-intensive suspension provides an elastic course and copes well with road irregularities.
