In 1987, at the Paris Motor Show, Peugeot unveiled a model 405 to the public. The sleek, elegant car with a sedan body represented Peugeot in the D class. He immediately received the prize for the best car of the year. In 1988, there was a five-door station wagon with a spacious 1640-liter trunk. It was later released all-wheel drive version.
The design of the 405 model was developed in collaboration with the famous Italian studio Pininfarina. Peugeot 405 is a front-wheel drive car with a 3-volume body and a fairly spacious interior (wheelbase 2669 mm). Due to the long base with small external dimensions, the 405th stands as a glove on the road. He confidently goes through any turns, precisely following the trajectory outlined by the driver, sensitively reacting to the position of the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal.
Particularly conquer the form of lighting: slightly slanted headlamps and extremely simple and at the same time elegant taillights. The exterior and interior of the Peugeot 405 do not look very outdated even today. The design of the dashboard and trim still look quite attractive. The steering column is height adjustable, the dashboard is very informative. The seat is quite hard with a full set of mechanical adjustments. Upholstery is usually fabric. However, on some versions there may be servo drives and leather.
The air flow for each passenger can be adjusted individually, and the thoughtful distribution of air from the deflectors in the dashboard provides a fairly good heat exchange in the cabin. The ergonomics of the internal space fully meets the requirements of those years. That's just such a Peugeot branded part, as the location of the horn button at the end of the turn-switch pleases all drivers far away. Visibility is not bad. Power steering (except for the complete set of GL). Peugeot 405 is famous for its excellent handling and cornering accuracy, for which he is considered one of the best front-wheel drive models for this indicator. The level of security is typical for cars of this class.
Adjustable belt buckles, airbags (only since 1994). The brakes were always installed reliable. At the fastest versions, the rear ones were not drum, but disc ones, which increased their reliability with intensive driving. Later versions are equipped with ABS.
A wide range of modifications, of course, contributed to the popularization of new items. Even the interests of sports enthusiasts were taken into account - they released the MI 16 "with a 150-horsepower engine, and in 1992 it was equipped with a turbine, and the power increased to 196 hp This modification was called Peugeot 405 T16. The car is also characterized by excellent dynamic performance.
I opened the list of power units 1.6-liter carburetor capacity of 75 hp, as well as its 92-strong dual-carburetor version. In addition to them, the original gamut included 1.9-liter engines with 110 and 125 hp, and the 16-valve modification developed as much as 158 hp. (with it, the top version of the Peugeot 405 Mi 16 gains a hundred in 8.6 s, and the maximum speed reaches 214 km / h). In the spring of 1988, the number of engines was increased by a 1.4-liter 70-horsepower carburetor, 105-horsepower 1.9-liter injection, 1.9-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 64 hp. and a 1.8-liter 78-horsepower turbo diesel.
In 1989, the 1.6-liter engine was equipped with injection, and the power increased to 89 hp. In 1991, the power of the 1.9-liter injection engine was raised to 148 hp. A year later, a change of generations of power units followed, and the injection ones were replaced by the former with a working volume of 1.4; 1.8 - and three 2.0-liter capacity respectively 75, 100, 122, 155 and 200 hp (the latter is turbocharged). The main gearboxes were mechanical 4-and 5-speed, which since 1988 added a 4-band "automatic". Front independent suspension type MacPherson, rear - torsion.
After the restyling, conducted in 1992, the model has slightly changed its appearance, instrument panel and torpedo, the trunk began to open up to the bumper, the interior became much more convenient. The car stayed on the conveyor for almost ten years.
