Peugeot 508 - car review

The Peugeot 508 was introduced to the general public in October 2010 at the Paris Motor Show. The car replaced in the lineup of the brand two models at once: Peugeot 407 and Peugeot 607. The new flagship comes in two body styles - sedan and station wagon. The basis for the model was the “Platform 3” developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen from the 407th model. The platform was stretched and the base of the Peugeot 508 increased by 9.2 cm. This made it possible to expand the space for rear passengers by more than 5 cm. The sedan has a length of 4.79 meters and will be longer by 10 cm 407, but shorter by 11 cm Peugeot 607.

The length of the Peugeot 508 SW wagon is 4.81 m. Despite the increased dimensions, the car turned out even lighter than the 407th. The Peugeot 508 sedan turned out 35 kg lighter, and the wagon - 45 kg lighter than the model 407 with the corresponding body. Lightweight construction was due to a number of innovations, such as: aluminum hood, new steel composition, magnesium elements in the design, composite trunk lid, the outer side of which is made of plastic.

Also, the use of new sound-absorbing materials allowed to ease the car by a few kilograms. The car will be produced in France for the whole of Europe. Peugeot 508 sets new benchmarks in the design of the brand and a higher level of quality and equipment. The design is elegant and solid. Due to the fact that the front overhang of the model was made shorter, the geometric permeability improved compared to the 407th. But the rear bumper on the contrary grew. This had a positive effect on the proportionality in the appearance of the car, and on the amount of luggage.

The hood is decorated with a modified emblem (which was presented last year to the 200th anniversary of Peugeot), and a tiny inscription with the name of the brand now flaunts under the lion. The interior design is of the highest quality: soft plastics, four-zone climate control (optional). Large exterior mirrors provide excellent visibility, and the driver’s landing has become much more convenient. Plus it is possible to put optional chairs with adjustable cushion in length and massage function. The dashboard is quite informative, readings are easy to read.

The highlight can be considered a small sliding screen on the front panel, which duplicates the indicators of navigation, speedometer and cruise control. The choice of engines for the model 508 corresponds to the spirit of the times. Like other automakers, Peugeot is gradually writing off multi-cylinder voracious engines. In particular, on the new model, the V6 was abandoned altogether in favor of the row “fours”, whose power they tried to increase due to turbocharging. A total of seven engines are offered for the Peugeot 508.

The smaller part of them is gasoline: one petrol - 156 hp and 1.6 THP (240 N • m) and the second 120 hp 1.6 VTi (160 N • m). One is aggregated with an automatic or mechanic, and the second with a BMP6 “robot”. All gearbox six-speed. The range of diesel engines is presented in five options. The first proposed diesel engine has 112 liters. from. with 1.6 HDi (254 N • m) with 5-speed mechanics.

Two two-liter, which develop 140 hp and 163 hp 340 N • m each One of them is with mechanics, the other is with a gun. The most powerful engine with an automatic transmission has 204 hp. 2.2 (450 N • m). Great attention was paid to the French traffic safety. Here there is an automatic switching of the main beam to the near one when approaching oncoming traffic, and turning lights in the three-speed mode for cornering lights. Model 508 successfully passed tests for compliance with Euro NCAP safety requirements, having received five stars. The car showed the best in class results in the category “Passenger-Child Protection” and received 97% for “Safety Devices”.

The Peugeot 508 was also awarded the Euro NCAP Advanced prize for the first-class Peugeot Connect SOS emergency call system, which is available as an option on the WIP Nav navigation system. In 2014, there was a presentation of the restyled version of the Peugeot 508 model. The exterior remained recognizable, the changes that occurred were dictated more by the trends of the times. Major innovations touched the front of the car.

She received a completely new three-zone headlights, a different shape of the front bumper and a modified, more interesting design of the grille. As a result, the exterior of the sedan has become more aggressive and predatory. For the most advanced versions of the RXH, GT and Allure, Peugeot offers a new lighting system that includes headlights, daytime running lights, turn indicators and fog lights, completely made of high-tech LED elements. Headlights consist of three modules, each of which has 4 LEDs, plus 3 additional LEDs are used when cornering lights.

In addition to security issues and energy savings, this technology allows you to fine-tune the pattern of headlights, while emphasizing the "cat" appearance of the car. Model designers have also worked on the rear lights. They increased horizontally, which is noticeable both when viewed from the side and when viewed from behind. Each of the lamps consists of 36 LEDs, organized in three lines, resembling claws in shape. Their opal light creates a unique tech-friendly light pattern, which is well remembered.

Reconstruction of the interior is evolutionary. There are fewer changes in the eyes than in the exterior, but they are still present in the fine details of the instrument panel, center console and other elements of the internal space. Immediately noticeable change for the better quality of the skin, improved ergonomics.

On the control panel in the restyled Peugeot 508 saloon a 7-inch touchscreen appeared. Due to this, the number of keys located on the central panel was abbreviated, and in the central panel a very useful compartment, designed to store small things, could fit. In the list of options, a keyless access system, an electromechanical handbrake, four-zone climate control, a rear-view color camera and a blind zone monitoring system appeared. Also, the car was equipped with a projection display, which allows you to quickly get acquainted with the traffic data and get the necessary information from the navigation system. The engine range of the updated Peugeot 508 will receive three new powertrains.

Including the 165-strong 1.6-liter THP equipped with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic and two 2.0-liter BlueHDi 150 hp. with 6-speed manual and 180 hp with automatic 6SP. But they will not reach Russia. We'll have to be content with old engines. True, new gearboxes will come to our market.

In addition to the four existing versions, the car received a new hybrid all-wheel drive version of the RXH with a plastic protective body kit.
