Seat Toledo - car review

SEAT Toledo is a small family car produced by the Spanish company SEAT (a division of the Volkswagen Group). For the first time SEAT Toledo was introduced in 1991. It was a 5-door hatchback built on the chassis of the Volkswagen Golf Mk II, the back of which was similar to the one that the Volkswagen Bora model had but had a tailgate (the SEAT Toledo used the A-platform from Volkswagen).

The wheelbase of the car was 2 470 mm. Note that small family sedans were rare at the time and the SEAT Toledo was often referred to as full-fledged sedans because of its overall length (4,320 mm) and the size of the rear, despite the fact that it had quite a bit of legroom for rear passengers and fairly low cost. Under the hood, a standard 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 74 hp was installed in the standard SEAT Toledo version. The GT version was also released, which was equipped with a more powerful 2.0-liter power unit and 114 hp. Later for Toledo Two more powerful engines have been proposed: a 2-liter GTI 16V with a power of 148 hp.

and a diesel power unit TDI volume of 1.9 liters, whose power was 109 hp. This version of SEAT Toledo was produced by the Chinese company Chery without any licenses and was sold under the names Chery Amulet, Cowin, Windcloud and Flagcloud. In 1999, the second generation SEAT Toledo was released. The car has become more streamlined than the previous version.

The concept of exterior design was significantly different, although the same studio was working on the new look as before - Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign. The updated SEAT Toledo is akin to such models of the time as the Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Bora, but still had the most dynamic look. We note the use of fully transparent headlights, which at that time were not so common on cars. The basis for the new generation SEAT Toledo platform was taken from the Volkswagen Golf Mk IV.

Now Toledo was a 4-door sedan family car. The release of the first time was made at the factory Audi / VW in Belgium. For the second generation Toledo was offered three options for gasoline engines. The top-end was a 2.3-liter V5 power unit with a power of 148 hp. It was followed by a 1.8-liter, 20-valve engine with a power of 123 hp.

But the base engine was a 1.6-liter engine with 99 hp .. The manufacturer also proposed a TDI diesel power unit with a volume of 1.9 liters and an output of 88 hp. and 109 hp, which was equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger. In 2000, the SEAT Toledo was adopted as the basis for developing a new hatchback from the SEAT called Leon. In 2001, the V5 engine was modified and its power was 168 hp. In the same year, a 1.8-valve powertrain with a volume of 1.8 was equipped with a turbocharger, as a result of which the power increased to 178 hp. A new VW TDI diesel engine also appeared whose power was 148 hp.

All engines worked in conjunction with a 6-speed manual gearbox. In 2004, the third generation of Seat Toledo was presented at the international motor show in Paris, which was completely different from the previous two. Leaving the concept of a family car, the Spaniards decided to turn this model into a compact van. The design of the third generation belongs to the famous Walter de Silva.

All engines offered for this model are identical to those offered at that time for other cars from the Volkswagen Group within: for petrol from 101 hp up to 148 hp and for diesel ranging from 104 hp up to 138 hp In 2006, a 168-horsepower TDI diesel power unit was added to the list of engines, and a Tiptronic gearbox appeared, available for all 2-liter FSI engines. In 2007, a 1.8-liter turbocharged TFSI was added to the range of engines. Production of the third generation Toledo was suspended in 2009, the model disappeared from the list of Seat cars offered.

However, in the spring of 2012 at the Geneva Motor Show, Seat showed a pre-production version of the fourth-generation Toledo sedan. A little later, in September at the Paris Motor Show, the car was presented in serial form. Very few differences from the concept - the serial Toledo in the exterior finish reduced the number of chrome-plated parts, and the rims became simpler. Inside, the front panel has changed a bit and a different steering wheel has been installed.

Compared with the second-generation vehicle, the successor of which can be considered the new Toledo, the overall length of the sedan has grown by 40 mm - to 4,480 mm, and the size of the wheelbase has reached 2,602 mm (an increase of 82 mm). The car can comfortably accommodate 5 people. It is noteworthy that the comfort of passengers did not affect the volume of the luggage compartment, the size of which amounted to 500 liters.

The nose part is distinguished by faceted optics, a bumper with a wide air intake and an interesting hood, which is given a highlight by stamping. Toledo's profile is quite dynamic. The stern is characterized by a difficult form of the fifth door and taillights with an angular design. The front panel is made of hard plastic.

In the upper part of the center console there are deflectors, just below - a music system (a display of a multimedia system with navigation is available as an option) and other controls. The front seats can not boast of good lateral support. The second row is spacious enough, even tall passengers will not complain about the lack of legroom and height of the cabin. In the European market, the Seat Toledo is offered with a wide range of power units, including a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 75, as well as the well-known 122-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI engine.

You can also order a car with a 1.6-liter diesel engine TDI CR 105 hp. and a more modest 90-strong version. As transmissions, a manual gearbox is offered, as well as a DSG dual-clutch VW robotized gearbox.
