The history of Octavia began in 1959. Then it was a simple, reliable car with a strong body and stable driving characteristics, with certain features of the time, which earned many prizes in international competitions. The car has become popular not only in the "home" market, but also in Western European countries. The model was even exported to South America and New Zealand. Production lasted until 1964, when Octavia was replaced by a completely new model, the Skoda 1000 MB. Modification with a station wagon stayed on the conveyor until 1971.
In total, from 1959 to 1971, 365 thousand Octavia were released. The second time Octavia appeared only in September 1996 at the Paris Motor Show. In 1997, mass production began.
This model was for the company Skoda a kind of "exam on maturity." After all, Octavia was the first completely new model created after the transition of the company under the control of the Volkswagen concern. It was also an application for a seat in a higher class, where Czech cars were completely absent for the last half century. The audience took Octavia quite warmly. Firstly, the hopes of the buyers were justified that with the arrival of the Germans in the management, the cars of the Czech company will acquire real German quality. Secondly, an attractive price was set for the car.
In the debut year, the Octavia was represented only by the hatchback body, and two years later, sales began of the station wagon, which has the additional Combi designation in its name. The basis of the Octavia laid the platform of the well-known Golf IV. But at the same time, the Czech car is an overgrown golf class, because in its dimensions it closely approaches the “D” segment. Octavia stands out very roomy trunk. Its volume in a hatchback is 528 liters, and with a folded rear sofa it does altogether 1,330 liters. In Combi, with a folded sofa, you can hold as many as 1,512 liters, while the maximum permissible load is 540 kg.
Such outstanding performance was achieved not only by increasing the rear overhang, but also by reducing the living space of the rear passengers - if in Golf IV behind people of medium height they feel more or less comfortable, then in Octavia they have a hard time, especially when the front seats are pushed to the stop. Octavia has several complete sets. The simplest is Classic (until 2000 it was called LX). It has nothing but an immobilizer, power steering and adjustable steering column.
In the next rank Ambiente (GLX), the filling is more appropriate for a modern car: central locking, power windows and electrically adjustable rear-view mirrors, on-board computer, airbags, as well as, as a rule, audio system and air conditioning. The third version is called Elegance (SLX), in addition to what is in the previous ones, it is distinguished by cast wheels and an extensive electric package. The top of the range Laurin & Klement is “charged” to the maximum: leather upholstery, an electric sunroof, 16-inch wheels, xenon headlights, parking sensors, a rain sensor, heated front seats, chrome, aluminum and wood in a dystrophy finish.
The driver's workplace meets all the requirements of ergonomics. Due to the adjustable steering column and the ability to select the desired height of the driver's seat problems with finding the optimal position behind the wheel does not arise. The seat itself is moderately hard, with good lateral support. All Octavia engines inherited from Volkswagen and Audi. Several four-cylinder petrol injectors and turbo diesel engines were installed on the model. At first, the car was offered only with a hatchback body and with the following engines: petrol 1.6 liter (75 hp) and 1.8 liter (125 hp), as well as 1.9 liter turbo diesel (90 hp). ).
A little later, a petrol unit with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 101 hp appeared. In addition to these engines, the car was equipped with 1.8 liters (125 hp), and since 2000, a fundamentally new eco-friendly 1.4 liters (75 hp). It is worth highlighting the modification of a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with an index of 1.8 T, developing 150 hp This unit is very popular among drivers who prefer an active driving style.
With the launch of the station wagon, the powertrain line was replenished with another TDI 1.9 liter turbodiesel (110 hp). In 1999, the all-wheel drive version of the wagon debuted (the hatchback began to be offered in the 4x4 version only a year later). They used the all-wheel drive system 4-Motion. In it, the torque between the axles is distributed by the Haldex clutch with the electronic control unit.
Under normal road conditions, it is all sent to the front wheels, but as soon as they start to slip, it immediately partially spreads to the rear. It should be noted that only cars with the most powerful engines - gasoline 1.8 T and turbo diesel were equipped with all-wheel drive. Even all-wheel drive versions have a different rear suspension - independent multi-link. Also in 1999, the line of power units was replenished with a new petrol 2.0-liter engine producing 115 hp. In 2000, Octavia underwent a facelift and received an updated appearance: slightly increased headlights, another grille and new bumpers. Unlike the wagon hatchback, the rear lights remain the same.
Modernization has also touched the cabin - the rear seat has been redesigned, resulting in an additional 40 mm for the rear passenger legs. In 2001, she debuted the “charged” all-wheel drive version of the RS with a forced 1.8-liter 20-valve engine, developing 180 hp. In 2004, Skoda introduced the second generation Octavia. The car was generously awarded with advanced technologies that are used by German colleagues: direct injection engines FSI, robotic 6-speed DSG gearbox and a new multi-link rear suspension. The first thing that catches your eye is the updated front end design.

The Octavia A5, which has been produced since 2004, is not too modern, becoming a thing of the past, giving way to a more presentable appearance. Excessive simplicity and adherence to the smoothed lines of the A5 was replaced by more stylish outlines of the front headlamps of complex shape and grille.
