Volvo S60 - car review

Photo Volvo S60

Work on the Volvo S60 began in 1997, in the original task it was a sports car with a particularly dynamic design. The result of the work of Swedish specialists was presented in the summer of 2000. In place of the Volvo S70 comes the S60 model - a car built on a shorter Volvo S80 and V70 platform. The new sedan turned out to be 50 mm longer than its predecessor S70. The fast-paced and sporty design of the Volvo S60 is a big step forward and, of course, away from the established stylistic customs of the company.

A rounded nose, low sloping roofline, short front and rear overhangs, noticeable protrusions running along the whole body in its middle part from racks to rear lights - all this makes the S60 look bright, memorable and more like a European sports sedan. The dark convex grille contributes dramatic notes of sportiness, highlighting the chrome elements, and this impression is enhanced by rounding the front end vertically and horizontally. Large taillights enhance the similarities with other members of the Volvo family. The boot lid is more pronounced than other Volvo sedans, dome-shaped, it helps to make the completion of the body more sporty and muscular.

The modern and sleek design of the Volvo S60 is in full compliance with the class and purpose of the car. The sportiness of the Volvo S60 is also underlined by the visor of the graphite-colored instrument cluster, door panels, the center console and deep, anatomically shaped seats. The Volvo seats have gained immense recognition for their design and functionality. Not only do they provide superior ergonomic body support and protection with WHIPS (Crash Protection) system and side airbags; They are specially designed with a sporting spirit. Seats also provide significant lateral support.

This is also true of the rear seat, where a back with a contour overhang provides passengers with excellent lateral support. The front and rear seats are in harmony with each other in shape and contour. Space for second-row passengers is more than enough, there can comfortably accommodate three adults. This is the result of thoughtful design. WHIPS is a mechanical system that is built into both front seats. It consists of a wire frame in the backrest suspended from the springs and a specially designed mechanism for fastening the backrest to the pillow. When the car strikes from behind, the system works in two phases.

Photo Volvo S60

In the first phase, the wire frame and its springs with limited travel prevent the person sitting in the backrest from being pressed too deep. It also provides support for the spine and prevents it from excessive bending. At the same time, WHIPS allows the entire backrest to move backwards, preventing the passenger from moving forward. The upper back moves up and down, forcing the headrest to better support the neck and head. In the second phase, the WHIPS mechanism allows the backrest to lean back, absorbing the impact energy and reducing the dangerous effect of the catapult. There are two standard equipment levels: Comfort and Dinamic.

In the latter version, the seats are more prominent, which gives a similarity to the layout of the cabin according to the 2 + 2 scheme, while the Comfort version provides more space for the third passenger in the back seat. Inside, smooth surfaces are visible everywhere, the joints of which at different angles give the impression of muscularity, for example, the edging of the instrument cluster. This creates a more dynamic style than round and oval shapes.

The salon has a large glass area, it is light, spacious and does not generate a feeling of enclosed space. The car has a three-spoke steering wheel, the smallest of all existing on the market, with a 60-liter airbag. Equally sporty and attractive is the Spaceball gearshift lever with aluminum trim.

The car has a specially built-in cabin filter that retains not only dust, but also exhaust microparticles. The luggage compartment Volvo S60 has a volume of 394 liters. It is easy to increase, if you fold the rear seat or part thereof. The range of engines consists of five-cylinder petrol units: a volume of 2.3 liters with high-pressure supercharging (250 hp), 2.4 liters with a low-pressure supercharger (200 hp), 2.4 liters of atmospheric (170 l. p.), 2.4 liters of atmospheric (140 hp) and 2 liters with high-pressure supercharging (180 hp). The most powerful versions are indicated by the T5 index.

Low internal friction and the latest technological developments in the field of electronic engine control improve speed characteristics and reduce fuel consumption. At the same time, the engines meet the highest international environmental standards. A choice of two five-speed gearbox: manual and automatic Geartronic with manual shift. The design of the car uses MacPherson type front suspension and fully independent multi-link rear suspension.

Traditionally, Volvo cars are characterized by a high level of active and passive safety. ABS with electronic brake force distribution comes as standard, and DSTC (Dinamic Stability and Traction Control) Dynamic Stability and Traction Control is available as an option. An interesting novelty on the car is the telemetric system “Volvo on Call”, which uses GPS to determine the location of the car and sends the necessary signals in case of an accident or theft.

The high level of passive safety allows the car to successfully cope with difficult situations on the road. To ensure a high protection zone around the people sitting in the car, the Volvo S60 was adapted and modernized in many ways according to its size, received short front and rear overhangs and correspondingly shortened deformation zones. Active safety is provided primarily by seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters. This means that the safety-belt system evaluates the situation and adapts its operation in such a way as to ensure the highest possible level of protection. Seat belts work in conjunction with a two-threshold airbag.

The side airbags move with the seats according to Volvo’s long-standing engineering concept, so they protect passengers from the most suitable position. Moreover, the inflatable curtain IC (Inflatable Curtain) has undergone a modernization in accordance with the specific geometry of the S60. It also protects the heads of the rear passengers with a side impact, closing the side windows and door frames. In some areas behind the panels, additional energy-absorbing padding is placed so that the impact energy is absorbed by the car, not the passengers. In 2002, the company announced the “charged” Volvo S60 R sedan.

Built on the basis of the Volvo S60 model, the car differed from the basic version with a unique self-adjusting suspension, all-wheel drive system of the new generation and the most powerful turbo engine. Volvo S60 R equipped with a unique system of electronic control of the suspension. This system is controlled by means of three keys on the dashboard of this car with the words “Compfort”, “Sport” and “Advanced Sport”.

By pressing one of these keys, the driver can instantly turn your car from a comfortable sedan into an extreme sports car. The new technology, called the Four-C, 500 times per second reads information from special sensors on each shock absorber, adjusting their work to specific road conditions. In the “Compfort” position, the car's suspension moves to the most comfortable position. The position of the "Sport" makes the car more "tucked up", and the suspension is already quite clearly working out all the irregularities, adding to the sedan "sportiness" in the behavior on the road.

Photo Volvo S60

Finally, the Advanced Sport mode turns the car into a real sports projectile, while all the Volvo S60 R systems work to maximize tire grip and help give real pleasure to an active drive enthusiast . In addition to the electronic suspension control system, a new generation of all-wheel drive electronic system also monitors the vehicle on the road. The heart of the fastest Volvo sedan is a 2.5-liter turbo engine that delivers 300 hp. With this engine, the car accelerates from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 5.8 seconds, and its maximum speed is limited to 250 kilometers per hour. Volvo S60 R is equipped with a new compact 6-speed gearbox.

Externally, the Volvo S60 R can be recognized by the significantly reworked front end, where large air intakes and other design of the grille appeared, as well as on 17- or 18-inch wheels with low-profile tires. Behind the trunk fit a very small spoiler, which, meanwhile, reduces the lifting force by 20 percent. The Volvo S60 R is available in limited quantities.

Also in 2002 comes the all-wheel drive version - Volvo S60 AWD. This is the first Volvo car with electronically controlled all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system, developed by the Swedish company Haldex, operates completely unnoticed by the driver, automatically distributing power between the wheels, as circumstances require. Together with the Haldex system, the kit also includes 40-centimeter light-alloy wheels, ABS and anti-roll bar. Under the hood of the Volvo S60 AWD 2.4-liter turbo engine with 5 cylinders. It works smoothly and smoothly, produces 197 hp. at 5100 rpm and has a torque of 285 Nm at 1800 rpm.

This is a new generation RN engine, and it is distinguished by good economy and environmental friendliness. In 2004, the Swedish company announced an updated version of the Volvo S60 model. New products can be distinguished by a slightly modernized design of the front end of the body, where a different grille, bumper and modernized headlights appeared. The interior has also been slightly updated, where new front panel trim materials have appeared.

However, more serious changes have occurred in the vehicle configuration. The Volvo S60 has received the latest road safety system BLIS (Blind Spot Information System). Its peculiarity lies in the fact that special cameras take photographs of the so-called “dead” zones around the car (25 shots per second), which are then analyzed by a computer, and if a dangerous vehicle or object appears in dangerous proximity, the system delivers a special sound and light signal. The truth is, this system works at speeds up to 10 kilometers per hour, so its main purpose is to assist with parking or maneuvering in narrow lanes.

Another innovation will be the Four-C second-generation adaptive suspension system. This system has two modes of operation - "Sport" and "Comfort" and allows you to adjust the modes of operation of the suspension under certain traffic situations. Top versions of the Volvo S60, sold as part of the T5 line, will now be equipped with updated engines. The usual 2.3-liter turbo engine was slightly modified: they increased the working volume to 2.4 liters, replaced the turbocharger, exhaust system, and also applied the new variable valve timing system.

All this has increased the engine power from 250 to 260 hp. With this power unit, the S60 accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in just 6.5 seconds. Finally, two more innovations: a new water-repellent windshield, on contact with which the raindrops coagulate and then are quickly blown away by a counter-flow of air and the front passenger airbag being deactivated. Volvo S60 is one of the most stylish and safe cars in the world, equipped with the most modern personal security systems. The new generation Volvo S60 debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010.

The main characteristics of the S60 have always been impeccable performance, comfort and safety, in the current generation these qualities are complemented by advanced design and attempts to give the car running sporting qualities. European fashion on the predominance of smooth lines hinting at the dynamic properties of the car, not spared even such a conservative, as Volvo. The car with its oblique rear struts, ayakupe, muscular front, convex waves of sidewalls and pronounced wheel arches turned out to be defiantly swift. The car became larger in all overall parameters, but at the same time gained only 45 kg in weight. The feeling of sportiness continues in the cabin.

The new three-spoke steering wheel (auxiliary keys for cruise control, music, etc.) are placed on it, fairly deep seats with good lateral support and the center console is slightly turned towards the driver. Became somewhat larger controls for audio and climate control. Ergonomics, design, materials and quality of the cabin, as befits a car with an aristocratic family tree, at a height. It inspires respect for the range of engines for the S60. Petrol and diesel engines from 115 to 304 hp And including - a new two-liter GTDi gasoline with direct injection, layer-by-layer mixture formation in the combustion chamber and an “intelligent” turbocharger, issuing 203 hp and 300 Nm.

The most powerful in the line 3-liter T6 with a capacity of 304 hp at 440 N / m. The 1.6 GTDi petrol is available in two versions (150 hp or 180 hp). Diesel - 2, and 2.4-liter at 160 and 205 hp respectively. Motors are aggregated with 6-speed manual or automatic robotic gearboxes.

Volvo S60 2011 is built on a shortened platform S80, which is equipped with more powerful shock absorbers, rigid springs and strengthened the elastic suspension elements. On all-wheel drive versions, the rear wheels are transmitted not only when the front wheels slip, but also when cornering. By the way, four-wheel drive can be installed only on the most powerful equipment with the T6 (304 hp) and D5 (205 hp) engines. Volvo has traditionally made itself a safety bet, equipping the car with a variety of electronic driver assistance systems.

In particular, a tracking system for blind zones, a tracking system for marking, a system for analyzing driver fatigue, as well as a system for preventing a pedestrian (Pedestrian Detection) are installed. The latter is based on the use of radar and video cameras, with which the electronics recognize a person on the vehicle’s path and, if the driver does not respond to warnings, begins emergency braking in automatic mode. This system operates at speeds up to 35 km / h. At a higher speed, the overall collision protection system prior to the moment of contact ensures a maximum reduction in speed, which minimizes serious injuries to a pedestrian.

Like its predecessor, the 2011 model year’s Volvo S60 is produced in a factory in Ghent, Belgium. In 2013, the manufacturer introduced a restyled version of the S60 sedan 2014 model year. The car visibly freshened up, lost weight and acquired modern features. Sedan has not changed in size. The length increased by 7 mm and reached 4 635 mm, the width with folded mirrors is still 1,899 mm, and the height of 1,484 mm remained unchanged.

The ground clearance is 136 mm, the base is 2 776 mm, the front and rear track is 1 578 mm and 1 575 mm, respectively (for the version on 17-inch wheels) - nothing has changed. And yet, you can distinguish the Volvo S60 2014 model year from last year’s version with the naked eye. All the major innovations are in front - this is a new headlight optics and new daytime running lights, located just below the headlights. A distinctive feature of the fastest version of the S60 T6 R-Design is the matte finish of the grille with black horizontal slats, and the matte and diagonal on which the Volvo logo and the R-Design label are located.

In all versions of the S60 2014 model year, the redesigned LED rear lights, and the rear R-Design can be easily identified by a diffuser in the lower part of the bumper, unusual branch pipes diluted on the sides of the muffler and 19-inch wheels of the Ixion II design. In general, the manufacturer offers an extended selection of wheels of various designs, which will allow buyers to achieve complete individualization of their car. When looking at the sedan from the side, the blown surfaces of the doors and side panels of the body, the high window-sill line of the compact side windows, the domed roof and the lean fodder are striking.

There are a number of details that Volvo specialists paid special attention to. For example, previously windshield washer nozzles were visible, now they are hidden under the hood. The radar body was painted in glossy black color, so now it is almost not visible behind the grille. It was decided to abandon the chrome edging of the grille and use a logo with a larger Volvo logo. New built-in tips of the exhaust pipes, which are offered for some engine options, demonstrate the physical and visual connection between the appearance of the car and the powerful engine. Despite the change and update, the look of the S60 remains consistently recognizable.

Volvo's design is a classic based on elegant simplicity and flowing lines. The salon has retained the familiar front panel architecture and the center console deployed to the driver, verified ergonomics of the controls, strong multi-functional steering wheel, comfortable front row seats with pronounced lateral support for the hips and back, comfortable rear seats, but new details have also appeared. Installs a new graphical dashboard. There are no analog dials left - the readings are displayed on the display, which offers three options for displaying information: Elegance, Eco and Performance.

In the first, the speedometer dominates, which is “embraced” by the blue scales of the tachometer and the coolant temperature. In eco mode, a quiet green light should adjust for a measured ride, and in the Performance version, the red light and the tachometer, which has speed figures flashing, occupies the central place. Also, a new multimedia system Sensus Connected Touch with a 7-inch touchscreen is installed on the center console (screen sensors are perceived even with the movement of a hand in a glove).

An advanced multimedia system allows you to go online, listen to music, use the navigator, and even provide a WiFi network in the car. Special attention to every detail, the use of natural materials such as wood and leather, combined with light and clear controls create the most comfortable atmosphere for the driver and passengers. For the S60 2014, new upholstery colors, new wood inserts, new ceiling upholstery and semi-matt metal frames for ventilation vents and lighting controls are offered.

Armchairs of the first row with a lower backrest added space for the legs of the passengers of the second row. For the two front passengers, sport bucket seats can be ordered as an option (these are included by default in the R-Design package). The customer is offered four chassis options - Touring, Dynamic, R-Design Sport with a reduced fit and a Four-C chassis with an electronic control system that performs 500 calculations per second. The choice of chassis depends on the driving style and engine installed.

In Russia, the Volvo S60 2014 is available with turbocharged petrol engines: a pair of 1.6-liter T3 (150 hp) and T4 (180 hp), 2.0-liter T5 (240 hp), 2 The 5-liter T5 (249 hp) and the 3.0-liter T6 (304 hp). Of the active safety systems that reduce the risk of an accident, it is worth noting the new active high beams. Now the Volvo S60 owner doesn’t have to switch to the neighbor each time - the smart car will change the light beam itself so as not to blind other drivers and at the same time maximize road lighting. New systems that support a given speed and prevent collisions have become even smarter.

Now they can detect cyclists and pedestrians, and with the likelihood of a collision, they will warn the driver with a signal and start braking. The updated City Safety algorithm, for example, can slow down the Volvo S60 at speeds up to 50 km / h. And if you are distracted and did not notice the sign of the speed limit, the RSI recognition system will prompt you about this, displaying the value on the instrument panel.

And still you can keep in touch with the car, Downloading the Volvo On Call mobile app on your smartphone. It allows you to check the technical condition of the machine, its location, manage the alarm. Already in the initial configuration Kinetic comfort driver and passengers provide climate control, Volvo branded security system, central locking, external car lights, heated front seats, electric heated mirrors and tilt (anti-glare), a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen .

As options are available electric driver's and front passenger's seats, electric sunroof, rain sensor, headlight washers, heated windshield, heated rear seats, rear view camera, driver monitoring system, active bi-xenon headlights, electric rear headrests folding seats, leather upholstery, trim elements of the interior with decorative inserts (wood, aluminum, graphite) and many more pleasant things. Of course, there is a wide choice of accessories for individualization of the exterior and interior of the car, ranging from floor mats and trunk, to hitch, lining and spoilers.
